Direct Huntington is an Internet-only FDIC-insured bank. The parent company, Huntington National Bank, was founded in Columbus, Ohio in 1866 and now has more than 700 branch locations in six states. The bank's Internet division opened in 1996. It claims to be the first existing brick-and-mortar bank to offer state-of-the-art online banking. Deposit accounts are FDIC-insured to the full amount allowed by law, which is currently $250,000 per depositor.
Account choices
The only account currently (2010) available through Direct Huntington is a high interest savings account. The minimum opening deposit of only $1 and no ongoing minimum balance. Interest rates are tiered with the best interest rates kicking in at balances over $20,000.
Other common types of accounts, such as a checking account, money market account or CD, are available from the parent company, Huntington National Bank.
Banking services
Direct Huntington provides free online banking with 24/7 access to the savings account. A free ATM card is included. The account can be linked to the customer's accounts at other banks to provide easy bank-to-bank transfers of funds.
